Grow The Healthy Way: Organic Horticulture Techniques

One good way to have a steady supply of healthy, fresh vegetable is to develop an organic garden. It does take some time and effort, though. There are a lot of different kinds of seeds you can choose from. Whether you are growing your first garden or looking for a few new tips, the following tips give some easy-to-implement organic horticulture device. Turn the handles of your garden tools into measuring rulers. You can use shovels or rakes as measuring sticks. Lay your handles on the floor, and put measuring tape right next to them. Mark your distances with a permanent marker. When you are at work in the garden, you will always have a handy measuring device on each and every tool. You don't need a costly chemical solution to deal with powdery mildew in your garden. Combine baking soda with a small dollop of liquid soap and add it to water. You just need to spray your plants with this solution once every five days until the mildew is no longer visible. Baking soda is safe for use on your plants and is a gentle, but effective way to care for your plants. When winter comes around, save some plants by putting them in the house. Try to save plants that are expensive or that are resistant enough to handle the transition. Always be careful when digging around the roots, and put the plant in a suitable pot. Make sure your soil is healthy enough before you start planting anything. You can get a soil analysis, and if you find your soil needs a supplement, do it! Save yourself the trouble of a failed crop by contacting your local Cooperative Extension to preform the soil test. Analyze the soil before you even get started with working in a garden. Have a soil report done. It is cost effective and you can make necessary adjustments, based on the report, to your soil so it is correctly enriched to encourage plant growth. A lot of cooperative extension offices can provide this service to you and it is worth knowing what you need to do in order to avoid ruining your plants.

Coffee Grounds

Plants require a good amount of CO2 in order to grow to their maximum height. Plants tend to grow better when the CO2 levels are higher. Greenhouses provide the best levels of CO2 for plants. It's best to keep CO2 levels high for the best growth of your plants. If the soil in your garden has a high concentration of alkaline, try mixing some coffee grounds into your garden's soil. Coffee grounds are an inexpensive way to increase the acid level in your soil. The plants will be healthier, leading to more delicious home-grown veggies. As fall arrives, it is the time to prepare for planting fall edibles. Try something different by planing kale or lettuce inside a pumpkin, instead of using the planter pots you traditionally use. After cutting an opening and removing the meat and seeds from inside the pumpkin, use Wilt-Pruf, sprayed throughout the inside and cut edges, and prevent rot from occurring. After you have finished this, you will be ready to start planting. Don't you hate it how fresh mint leaves take over all of your garden, even though you love them? Try to keep your mint in a container in your garden to stop their rampage. If you would like the mint leaves to still be in the ground, simply plant the container, and the leaves will stay within the boundaries of the pot. Let your new seeds soak in a dark spot overnight. Simply place a handful of seeds in a container, cover the seeds up with water, and stash it away. This will allow your seeds to be hydrated and get a head start when growing. The seeds will most likely survive and mature this way. Plant for fall color. Fall, though, can still be an interesting time for trees. The autumn season can be one of the best growing seasons and is certainly the most colorful. There are a number of trees that provide exuberant displays of color, such as Dogwood, Beech and Maple. When you choose shrubbery, try hydrangea, barberry, or cotoneaster. Tempt your cat away from the plants he has been bothering by planting catnip or wheat grass near them. You could also place something that will cause your cat to go away from your plants, such as citrus peels or mothballs. Spray fragrances such as old perfume or aftershave on grass around your garden to help keep your dog away from the plants. This will mask any scents that might attract your dog and make your garden less interesting to him. Before you start planting your garden, plan it out. Doing so means you can remember where each particular plant is when you start seeing sprouts arise from the earth. Another benefit is that you won't lose the little plants in a big garden patch. If you pick vegetables around high noon when it is very hot, you are likely to damage them. Cut them with a tool rather than pulling or twisting, otherwise you could damage the plant itself. If you want an organic way to weed your garden, try "boiling" them. Boiling water in a pot is a safe "herbicide." Just pour boiling water directly on top of the weeds cautiously to avoid damaging your plants. The weeds' roots will be damaged by the boiling water; normally, this prevents them from continuing to grow. Heather can bring you beneficial insects. Bees will go straight for these plants in the spring. Heather beds are typically left untouched, which is why helpful little critters like ground beetles and spiders call them home. Because of this, you might want to invest in a good pair of gardening gloves for the times when you need to prune it. Are you one of the millions who loves some fresh mint leaves, yet you absolutely hate the way they tend to take over any garden they are planted within? Rein their growth; you can do this simply by planting mint inside a larger garden container or pot. Bury the container so that your plant does not stand out. The container will keep the roots from spreading too far. If you want to spend more quality time outdoors with your children, why not allowing them to help you with your gardening? Kids delight in the idea of growing things and seeing how things change over time. Explain every step to your child and he or she will hang on to your every word. Fertilize your garden. Manure is a great garden additive, but it is important that you choose a manure that has been composted commercially so that there is less of a risk of pathogens. It is important that you use some sort of fertilizer, although it doesn't really matter which variety you choose. When your plants begin to sprout, they can survive in somewhat cooler temperatures. As your plants grow, move them away from the source of heat. Take off any plastic that is on the containers to keep away from warmth and moisture. Watch the seeds so you can know when you do this. Put a couple of inches of organic mulch around each of your vegetable plants. The mulch help keeps the soil that is around the plants much more moist for much longer. This is also efficient in preventing weeds from growing. This will save you a ton of time and work. Increase your property value with landscaping. Landscaping is a cheap way to really increase the value of your property. Investing in plants can raise the value of your property by 20%, or sometimes even more. The plants you buy should be able to withstand normal regional weather conditions. Two items you need to invest in when working in a garden are a wheelbarrow, and a kneeling stool. Gardening can take a toll on the knees, but a small ergonomic stool will be a comfortable solution. As well, gardening can involve some heavy lifting and moving, so a strong wheelbarrow can really make that aspect much more effortless. Check the roots of your plants. When buying tomato seedlings for the garden, keep an eye on lush green starts with root systems that are bad. Starts like these can remain on the seedlings. This will inhibit their growth because they will not be able to grow until they are gone. Familiarize yourself with the optimum harvesting time of your vegetables. Each type of produce has unique time frames for harvesting at the peak of flavor. Many vegetables are best when picked young; baby peas are a prime example. Tomatoes, though, are tastiest when they have been allowed to ripen on the vine as long as possible. So, make sure you do some research, and find out when the best time to harvest your vegetables is. To eliminate pests naturally, look for plants and flowers that repel harmful insects and animals without damaging your garden. Natural insecticides are sometimes more effective than the myriad synthetic, chemical-based products available. However, botanical insecticides may not last as long because of their biological makeups, which makes them disappear more quickly. Create a focal point in your garden with a unique plant. A focal point in the garden will capture your attention. Quite often a distinctive plant works well as a point of interest.
